Introducing images

This section describes the basic tasks for working with image files.

Images do not appear directly in maps, but are referenced by the topics where they appear.

There are two distinct stages involved in adding an image to a topic.
  • First, you create an image object by importing an image into the CMS.
  • Then you put the image reference into the topic.

If you want to use different image formats for different presentation modes – online and PDF, for example – you can import these different versions as part of the same image object. DITA CMS keeps track of the different formats and will use the one that's appropriate.

This section describes how to insert images into topics using the Oxygen and XMetaL editors. If you want to use a text editor for this task, you'll find instructions in the section on making references to other files. See Insert an image into a topic.
